One with Christ

"So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, jsut as Christ also does the church, because we are members of His body. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church" (Eph 5:28-32).

Some things God brought to my attention in reading this passage tonight:

  • the word, own-- look how many times it's used, not just in these 5 verses but in the surrounding verses as well. We are clearly God's own possession. Wow!
  • Christ nourishes and cherishes us He would His body because we are parts of His body!
  • Christ has shed His blood to make God and us (polar opposites apart from His blood) one flesh! We are one WITH Christ! One flesh. Just like a man and a woman become one flesh when they get married. Can He get us any closer to Him?!
  • Also, look how much security that is for us! He is not going to rip apart His own flesh if we sin, disobey, fall, stumble, etc. We are one with Him, and nothing can change that! No wonder He hates divorce-- because marriage is a picture of His relationship to us and divorce is nowhere in that picture.
